The University of Bochum is one of the winners of the competition “Excellence Start-up Center.NRW” and gets 24M€ from the state North Rhine-Westphalia to support innovative and growth-oriented spin-offs of the university for the next five years. In the end, the concept of Bochum “Worldfactory Startup Center” convinced with these aspects:
- Establishment of a technology campus
- Build up topic-related incubators,
especially in the area of smart systems, materials and health
- Create a new maker-space at the technology campus
- To offer a new entrepreneurship study program
The overall aim is to increase the number and quality of company foundations, out of the University of Bochum.
There is empirical evidence, that the regional “knowledge structure” has a great impact on the entrepreneurship culture of the region itself. In this logic researchers assume, that there are two components of entrepreneurial activity: the characteristics of opportunity and the characteristics of people, that exploit these opportunities. But where do opportunities come from? They arise at places, that on the one hand create knowledge, and on the other hand cannot realize the commercialization of this knowledge. This situation creates an opportunity for people to found a company with the knowledge, that they’ve gained at their educational or working place and to put this knowledge into a business model. In science this concept is called “knowledge spillover”.
Dr.- Ing. Arndt-Hendrik Zinn, CEO and founder of the university spin-off Zolitron Technology appreciates the new developments of his “home university”:
“It is a blessing that the Ruhr-University has even more resources to encourage and support potential founders to create innovative and leading companies in the industries of tomorrow, now. For me the support and advise of the Ruhr-University of Bochum has been very helpful to create a fast-growing start-up company out of what has once been a research interest.”
After three years the state NRW will evaluate the first outcomes of the project. Zolitron Technology is eager to support the Ruhr-University and future entrepreneurs during that time.
